How to pick

There is no single best source. Linux news splits into four jobs: deep technical reporting, fast release news, distro-specific announcements and community discussion. A good setup has one source per job.

Start with the distro you run (its official news feed), then add one deep source and one fast source. Add community discussion only if you enjoy it; it is the noisiest category.

Deep technical reporting

LWN.net is widely read for kernel development coverage, and Phoronix for hardware, graphics drivers and benchmarks. Both are good for understanding why something changes.

Fast release news

9to5Linux, OMG! Ubuntu and It's FOSS publish quickly about releases and desktop changes. They are good when you only want to know what shipped today.

Official channels

Kernel.org lists every kernel release. Arch Linux News, Fedora Magazine and the Ubuntu Blog are official or community-run channels for their distros; the Arch news page in particular is worth following if you run Arch, because it announces updates that need manual steps.

Staying on top of it

If you do not want to check six sites every day, a daily digest that lists the new items from your chosen sources saves time. Linux Doctor does this for free by email, and also publishes the daily list publicly on the latest checkup page.
